The Garden of Happiness: Exploring Biophilic Design
At NY NOW, Michael Tavano Design and a who's who of tabletop and furniture makers explored how interiors that incorporate elements of nature can create human happiness. Over 25,000 retailers, press and designers attended Retail Renaissance NY NOW. An experiential dream world 'The Garden of Happiness' focuses on the trending concept of Biophilic Design. It's one of four “Transcend” concepts by top designers featured at the summer market held at NYC’s Jacob Javits Center. Says Michael, “I’ve based my entire design practice on a belief that interiors can create happiness. Turns out, science agrees.” Specifically, the theory of Biophilia, which posits that elements of nature brought into interiors can enhance wellness and well-being.
Michael finds he’s happiest when designing “Spaces where people gather, rooms designed for community, connection and yes, feasts – for all the senses.” At NY NOW he created a fantasy entertaining space where a dining room magically morphs from its indoor setting into an outdoor garden. The feeling is "fun, modern and elegant,” says Michael. Living garden botanicals abound, and mixed in throughout, the latest in table top decor is abloom. Dream-like imagery and art of animals, botanicals and forests also play a role.
